Kurzbeschreibung: Stem cell biology represents a new research frontier which may ultimately lead to a better quality of life for patients affected by a wide variety of medical conditions. Stem cell research has received widespread attention, both because of its medical potential and because of its socio-cultural implications.

This European conference will be conducted as a patient orientated event that intends to inform, initiate and promote a meaningful dialogue on issues relating to stem cell research. Patients and their representatives will be invited to actively engage with scientists, doctors, religious and political representatives, as well as the media, in order to contribute to an informed, balanced debate.

For the first time, patients from up to 34 countries constituting the European Research Area will be invited to participate with other groups to discuss, at a pan European level, many of the issues and challenges relating to stem cell research and its therapeutic applications. There will be a particular focus on the impact of research on patients and their needs, whose views will be actively sought. Patients will be provided with sufficient and accessible background material relating to stem cell research and will have considerable opportunity to pose questions to and engage with experts in the field.

Simultaneous translation into the major European languages will be available and participants will also be invited to engage in live keyboard voting on a number of key issues at various stages during the conference, which will use lay language throughout. The event will be broken into a number of key sessions, each introduced by a prerecorded presentation. The debate will be facilitated by an experienced conference moderator, who will provide ample opportunity for all participants to actively engage in the wide ranging discussion.

There is no charge for the conference registration but participants will be responsible for funding their own travel and hotel costs. Some funding will be available through the EU Commission, allowing participants from the ten new Member States as well as the four Candidate countries to apply for funding of their travel and hotel costs.
