Kurzbeschreibung: Biosafety has been consolidating as a new science in Brazil since 1995. The introduction of Biosafety as a new discipline in the graduation and post-graduation courses within the country has allowed the improvement of the knowledge on this subject. The restrictive rules on Biosafety procedures in different countries require the enhancement of the level of quality and safety of laboratories and new technological procedures. The new requirements of containment, the planning and design of laboratories facilities are each day more complex and requires a continuous improvement of the academy and workers.

The Fourth Edition of the Brazilian Congress on Biosafety and the Latin American Symposium of Transgenic Products has the main scope of promoting the exchange of experiences between the academy and the private sector on the field of biotechnology and processes involving biological risk, food safety and raise discussions on the new procedures and principles of risk management, interfaces between Biosafety and Bioethics, mainly on the field of the new therapeutic methods, the deepening of polemic questions such as bioterrorism, the compatibility of trade regulations within the region, juridical issues on the filed of biotechnology, new standards for safety laboratories, bioprospection and biosafety, release of GMOs in centers of origin and of genetic diversity, models for study of gene flow, the use of gene markers for antibiotic resistance, transport of dangerous materials, between other important issues.

During the edition of these two traditional meetings the scientific programme will promote a reflection of the new developments of biotechnology and related sciences, having as a basis the new developments of genomics and its impacts to the development of science and technology and the establishment of new paradigms within the Latin American region.

As parallel meetings we will have the First Edition of The National Meeting of Presidents of Local Biosafety Committees which will bring together around 200 representatives of all institutes, working on the field of genetically engineering in the country. Also, the First Edition of the Symposium of Public Diffusion of Biotechnology will consolidate the main objectives of ANBio of approximating science to the society and will put together students, secondary school teachers and the general society interested in the new developments of science in the field of biotechnology. During this first parallel meeting, ANBio will launch its special magazine Public Diffusion of Biotechnology, which will be a channel of communicating the new developments of biotechnology to students, teachers and to the general society, being a mechanism of communication of the new knowledge of biotechnology and its mechanisms of control.

We hope that the exchange of experiences among specialists of different countries will allow the consolidation of Biosafety as a scientific matter in Brazil.
