· Greater understanding of disease mechanisms
· New insight into disease risk, and opportunities for prevention
· New ways to categorise, diagnose and treat disease
We are increasingly able to describe genetic factors as important determinants of health in most chronic disorders - working alongside the familiar environmental factors. Genetic applications are now developing in most areas of medicine and healthcare.
Scientific knowledge and technologies must be integrated into public policy and services in a responsible manner. This means that every public health specialist must start to understand the developing science and its social context and incorporate both into professional practice.
In this conference international speakers will explore the potential of genomics to improve the health of populations, its impact on society and the implications for public health specialists and specialists in genetics who will be at the forefront of change.
The conference is aimed at all public health specialists and those in training, commissioners and individuals in relevant academic specialties such as epidemiology, social sciences or humanities, and specialists in clinical genetics, genetic counselling and laboratory genetics who wish to gain a broader understanding of the context for their discipline and the potential wider impact on population health. It may also be of interest to other clinical professionals.
