Innovative protocols for exploring better research practices for certain problems may be rejected because they deviate from standard practice. Worse, investigators may self-censor good ideas or fail to explain their approach in a manner ethics committees can appreciate. Inadequate channels of communication between investigators and ethics committees may hinder progress. This conference is designed to enable investigators and ethics committees to work together to devise effective and ethical approaches to difficult research problems.
A panel of experts, including Dr. Bernard Schwetz, Director of the Office of Human Research Protection, will recommend regulatory-compliant ways to develop acceptable protocols. Conference participants are invited to submit cases of problematic research ideas, and noted experts will offer solutions.
