Kurzbeschreibung: As in previous years there will be plenary and educational sessions, oral presentations, working party discussions, workshops and joint sessions with the nurses group and societies that the EBMT is working closely with on common goals. Thanks to the collaboration of invited speakers and their contribution to the final programme, cutting edge science will be presented by outstanding experts in their field.

Perusing this programme you will notice that we have put special emphasis on the immunological aspects and new indications of transplantation. Consequently, we invited speakers with expertise slightly different from what haematologists, oncologists, and physicians involved in the care of transplant patients will consider their day-to-day practice. This decision was taken because transplantation of haemopoietic stem cells has crossed its traditional borders and an ever increasing number of neurological, rheumatic, liver, cardiac and other diseases are being treated with stem cells – and we felt that EBMT should get much more involved with these new exciting areas than has been the case so far.

Haemopoietic stem cells refer to adult stem cells, the versatility of which we all use to treat a large variety of disorders. In one of the most exciting sessions we will ask the question as to whether embryonic stem cells, which have gained so much interest not only by scientists but also in the public sector, really are necessary to grow tissues and organs needed by our patients or if identical results can be achieved if we only learn to better exploit the potential of adult stem cells. We have also introduced controversies – a type of debate where two experienced protagonists in the field are asked to defend their position in favour or against the use of transplantation in a specific clinical situation. Besides the intellectual challenge, we expect the controversies to be rhetorical highlights of the meeting.

There can be no progress without knowledge of history! More than half a century after the first animal experiments demonstrated that transplantation of bone marrow was able to save lethally irradiated mice from irreversible marrow aplasia and death, we thought it was time to ask some of our colleagues who performed key experiments crucial to the development of clinical transplantation to review their work and we have invited our outgoing president, Jane Apperley, to share with us her vision of how transplantation will develop in the future.

Social interaction has always been a most enjoyable part of EBMT meetings, where physicians, nurses, data managers and all kinds of health professionals dealing with blood or marrow transplantation come together not only to present and discuss topics of interest but to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and social programme offered. We strongly recommend not to miss the opening ceremony and the EBMT Party – two events which we are investing every effort in, to make them unforgettable highlights of the congress.

EBMT 2006 not only offers the opportunity to exchange scientific data and socialise with colleagues and friends. As the largest city of Northern Germany, Hamburg is an important harbour and centre for international business, the arts, entertainment, culture, science, and all other aspects of life.
Within walking distance of the Congress Centre you will find shopping malls, museums and recreational areas. Indeed, there are so many things to see we hope you can find a little extra time to experience at least a few of the attractions Hamburg has to offer.
