In addition to the Interdisciplinary Fellowship in Health Care, the Institute also co-sponsors the Pitts Memorial Lectureship in Ethics. The overreaching goal of the Lectureship is to provide the MUSC family of students and faculty an outstanding educational experience in the general area of ethical issues in health care, as they relate to delivery of services, policy, law, and society.
The Pitts Memorial Lectureship is made possible through the generous bequest of Thomas A. Pitts, M.D. Dr. Thomas Pitts was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Medical University in 1931, was elected Vice-President of the Board in 1940, and served as President from 1951-66. In 1982 he was elected as an Emeritus member of the Medical Board of Trustees, and he held that position until his death in 1991. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the Medical University in 1982.
