Kurzbeschreibung: We cordially invite the ISPNE community to Leiden, The Netherlands for the 37th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology - ISPNE - to be held August 23 to 26, 2006. The city of Leiden, the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rijn and refuge to the Pilgrim Fathers, is a charming, typically Dutch town, located close to Amsterdam Airport. Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands, founded in February 1575, as a gift from William of Orange to the courageous citizens who withstood a long siege. The university’s motto is Praesidium Libertatis, the Bastion of Liberty. In an atmosphere of freedom of speech and religion, philosophers like Spinoza and Descartes fostered their ideas. At Leiden the illustrious Dutch professor of medicine, botany and chemistry, Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738), was the first in Europe to stress the importance of the natural sciences for the study of medicine. Also significant for the ISPNE, Nico Tinbergen, one of the great scholars of animal behavior made his career in Leiden.

The Conference theme ‘Hormones and Brain – from cloning to clinic’ highlights multi-disciplinary studies integrating psychology, neurobiology, endocrinology, immunology, neurology and psychiatry from their basic perspective to the clinical implications. One of the main objectives is to understand how psychobiological factors regulate the stress response and to pinpoint when these actions relate to either health or neuropsychiatric illness. How genes, environment and (early) experience affect remodeling and plasticity of nerve circuitry is also an important conference topic, particularly since sex, stress and metabolic signals can modify such adaptive processes. It will be fascinating to learn how novel technology rapidly expands our knowledge on signaling cascades in the brain, while at the same time we witness a striking revival of the appreciation of classic hormones and neuropeptides in their capacity to modulate basic mechanisms underlying resilience and vulnerability. We trust you will pencil August 23-26, 2006 in your agenda, book your flight to Holland and enjoy with us what will be a particularly exciting conference.
