Kurzbeschreibung: The Falk Symposium 156 on Genetics in Liver Diseases is part of the XIII
International Falk Liver Week 2006 in Freiburg.

The symposium will cover in a first part the basic aspects of genetic diagnosis,
pharmacogenetics, micro-arrays and their relevance for liver diseases, including viral hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and gall stone diseases. In
a second part, the most important hereditary liver diseases will be discussed including hemochromatosis, Wilson disease, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, porphyrias, and cystic fibrosis. In a third part the genetics of cholestatic and metabolic liver diseases as well as the current status of experimental and clinical studies of gene therapy for liver diseases and stem cell transplantation will be presented. Each part will start with a State-of-the-Art lecture that will introduce the topic. A special highlight of the symposium will be the presentation of the “International Hans Popper Award” to an outstanding scientist in the field of liver diseases who will give the “International Hans
Popper Award Lecture”.

In the tradition of the Falk Symposia, the Falk Symposium 156 will provide an
exiting overview of the current developments in the field of genetics of liver diseases, their diagnosis, treatment and prevention that will be presented by an international faculty of outstanding scientists and clinicians. On behalf of the co-organizers of the Falk Symposium 156 I would like to cordially invite you to actively participate in this interesting part of the XIII International Falk Liver Week 2006.
