Kurzbeschreibung: Formerly called "Current Protocols in Stem Cell Biology", this annual workshop provides hands-on training for investigators learning how to culture, manipulate, and differentiate ES cells from humans in vitro. This workshop reflects an increasing need for practical training in the manipulation of human stem cells in the laboratory and will draw heavily on state-of-the-art expertise in the area of growth, maintenance and differentiation of human embryonic stem cells.

Topics include:

* The preparation of media, including quality control practices

* The preparation and cryopreservation of mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs)

* ES cell passaging techniques

* ES cell cryopreservation

* ES cell transfection techniques

* FACs analysis of ES cells and derivatives

* Experimental differentiation of ES cells

Special topics will include: Cell Surface Markers on Human Stem Cells; Embryoid bodies; Teratomas; Genetic modification of human embryonic stem cells; Chemical and Functional Genomic Approaches in Stem Cell Biology; Engraftment of Human ES cells in the Laboratory Mouse; Therapeutic Use of Somatic Derivatives of Human Embryonic Stem Cells and; Ethics and Public Policy on the use of human ES cells in the U.S. and abroad.
