Kurzbeschreibung: The 59th Annual Symposium will bring together internationally recognized scientists from academia, industry, regulatory agencies, and patient advocates to describe and discuss advances in the field of stem cell biology related to the physiology of normal tissues and the development of cancer, as well as the potential translation of these concepts into novel therapies. Dr. Irving Weissman (Stanford) will present the keynote address. In addition, Dr. Gail Martin (UCSF) will receive the Ernst W. Bertner Memorial Award for her pioneering research in stem cell biology. There will also be a poster session for participants to present their research findings, and a Meet-the-Experts Luncheon for the trainees. The symposium begins Friday morning and will end Sunday at noon.

Goal

The goals of this symposium are to:

* provide a forum for effective exchange of information in different scientific disciplines actively engaged in basic research and clinical research on stem cells in cancer development and normal tissue physiology and pathology. this aim will be accomplished through formal oral presentations and poster sessions;

* increase the awareness of clinicians and researchers of new advances in the field of stem cell biology and the potential application of these advances to cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment;

* provide a format for graduate students, postdoctoral and clinical fellows to learn state-of-the-art techniques and approaches in the field of stem cells, particularly as it relates to cancer treatment and outcome;

* bring together investigators who are well acquainted with the realities of applying new strategies in the clinical setting with basic researchers involved in the most recent advances in understanding the use of stem cells in cancer detection and treatment of cancer;

* identify important and productive directions for future research in the area of stem cells relevant to cancer and regenerative medicine.

Who Should Attend

The program will be of broad interest to scientists, scientists-in-training, physicians, physicians-in-training, students, and fellows interested in hearing the newest advances in the area of stem cell research.

Educational Objectives

After attending the symposium, participants should be able to:

* describe and discuss use of stem cells in the detection, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer;

* identify key issues relevant to the use of stem cells in cancer and regenerative medicine;

* recognize and identify the outcome of integrating stem cells in cancer medicine.
