Kurzbeschreibung: Media are of crucial importance in promoting and understanding bioethics. The relationship between media and bioethics has always been very close. Journalists were, among others, initiators of bioethics: remember Shana Alexander and Michael Rivera? Their stories warned the public of serious problems and called for action, Today the role of the media in bioethics is even more important. Bioethics cannot be developed without an active role of media and participation of journalists.

World news reports on environmental pollutions, misuse of medicine, abuse of children's rights, violation of human rights, not respecting privacy and dignity of individuals... But, these reports are often based on scandals with sensationalistic coverage without a human dimension and without contributing to the creation of a better world. Journalists, too, should respect ethical principles and concerns in their work. But, media are under great influence of the market. Media owners are driven by the pursuit of profit; they are interested in increasing the number of readers, viewers, and listeners, which brings more advertising and more revenue.

That is why the International Center for Education of Journalists (ICEJ), in cooperation with Croatian Journalists Association, is organizing associate congress "Media and Bioethics" in Opatija, on September 3-4, 2008.

The main purpose of the associate congress to the 9th World Congress of Bioethics is to raise the awareness of the role of the media and to open debate on improving media ethics.
Journalists, media experts and communication scientists from all over the world will discuss the hot topics of media and bioethics with the goal of better informing the public about bioethics.

Members of the Organizing Committee include eminent media experts such as prof. dr. Michael Kunczik from Mainz University, prof. dr. Thomas Bauer, Vienna University, prof. emeritus Claude Jean Bertrand from Sorbonne, prof. dr Sherry Ricchiardi from Indiana University and others are inviting journalists, media experts and communication scientists to actively participate in the "Media and Bioethics" congress.

The Associate congress "Media and Bioethics" will be held in Opatija, a summer resort near Rijeka, at the point where the Mediterranean reaches most deeply into the European continent. With 163 years of tourist tradition, Opatija is suitable for holding all kinds of meetings, equally well equipped for work and relaxation. The City Mayor, dr. sc. Amir Muzur, and the City Government, are fully supporting the organization of the associate congress.

ICEJ is situated in a beautiful building, an old villa in the very center of the historic resort of Opatija and offers all the training facilities with modern technical support. The International Center for Education of Journalists in Opatija and Zagreb - ICEJ, was founded in the summer of 1998 as a self-supporting, non-governmental and non-profit organization with the mission to educate and improve professional skills of journalists. Our experience and success in training media professionals has evolved over the years, so taking the step across from training journalist to training others how to deal with them, was just natural, but our facilities gave us also the opportunity to get involved in organizing all other kinds of meetings.

Conferences are held in a large hall with 120 seats, with the possibility of simultaneous translation. Besides, at disposition to the participants are a classroom with 30 seats, appropriate for workshops and round tables and a lounge with comfortable seats, suitable for business or similar meetings. Both rooms are fully equipped with presentation devices (overhead and LCD projectors, TV and VCR). There is also a computer lab with 15 PCs and internet connection. Our office space is also suitably equipped (photocopy, scan, print, phone and fax), and, last but not least, there is also the catering area at your service. ICEJ can custom design conferences, seminars and workshops on all issues, and even accommodation, travel arrangement, excursions, refreshments and welcome parties are manageable with our local partners.
