Kurzbeschreibung: The relationship between bioethics and ethical theory is becoming increasingly unclear. Some view bioethics as a sub-discipline of philosophical ethics while for others bioethics is primarily a topic of public discourse or an academic activity using socio-empirical methodologies. It is contested whether referring to discussions in philosophical ethics is necessary for developing appropriate answers for the moral questions raised by the life sciences or rather an obstacle for the search for common values and shared moral convictions. The summer school will open a forum to discuss a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the relationship between bioethics and ethical theory. The aim of the course is not only to offer an overview of contemporary debates about bioethics but also a critical examination of different approaches. In addition, we want to provide an opportunity for PhD students to reflect on the methodology in their own research projects and a forum to discuss how to deal with the controversies about methodology in contemporary bioethics. The course will be of interest to PhD-students from different disciplines (philosophy, theology, medicine, biology, law etc.) who are interested in questions of bioethics.
