Kurzbeschreibung: The field of biomaterials is developing rapidly. At present federal programs are
strongly supporting the field in anticipation of the positive results in implantology for
an ageing population. A novel aspect of the past years has been to implement the
fourth basic material in implantology besides metals, ceramics and polymers – the
so-called biomolecular materials. A good question is: what is a biomolecular
material? Come to the meeting and find out or inform others of your work!
Nanotechnology today is a newspaper and magazine word and it is difficult to
differentiate fantasy from reality. Nanofibers and polyelectrolyte multilayers are a
reality and fascinating tools on the nanoscale for constructing new materials and
surfaces. Tissue engineering is lower-keyed than several years ago. One reason is
the paucity of known growth factors and a lack of understanding in their application
and action. Otherwise these factors belong to the field of highest growth although
their action on periimplant tissue behavior is still a major enigma. Therefore special
attention will also be given to angiogenic factors and the delivery of oxygen to
tissues. New technologies in biomaterials such as "bone-welding" and non-decaying
antibacterial surfaces are in development and reaching the clinics warranting our
focussed awareness. In addition advances in clinical biomechanics are having a
major impact on patient care. Finally what good are biomaterials if the resulting
implants cannot be mass-manufactured and distributed world-wide by the industry?
So industrial participation is essential for such a symposium.

We want to thank the organizing and technical committees, especially recognizing
the efforts of the local organizing committee for reviewing and correcting the
abstracts for the scientific program and for organizing the exhibition and special
events. We are also greatly indebted to our sponsors and the Lord Mayor of Essen
with a very special mention of the IEW – Interessengemeinschaft Essener Wirtschaft
e.V., which provided the resources for inviting our international guests, thus giving
this meeting the status worthy of a European Capital of Culture 2010.
