Kurzbeschreibung: Since 1990 general practice has been contractually rewarded for delivering health improvement activities. The scope and range of these activities has gradually increased to cover many aspects of individual lifestyle and risk. However, our understanding of what kinds of activities are undertaken and how they are undertaken is very limited. At the same time there are key questions about the evidence base underpinning many public health activities in general practice and the introduction of the new health checks pro-gramme raises particular concerns about how risk is both calculated and applied to patient populations. Yet at the same time, as a key health care service located in the community and supporting individuals and families, general practice and associated primary care services play an important part in both supporting those people who are unwell as well as those who are well.
The aim of the conference will be to examine key public health issues faced in general practice. The context for the conference is the increasing emphasis on the role of general practice in identifying and managing health problems and the impact of contractual incentives, professional practice and social values in shaping such practice.
