Kurzbeschreibung: Efforts to develop non-invasive alternatives to current invasive approaches to prenatal genetic diagnosis are moving quickly toward clinical introduction. These approaches would provide access to genetic diagnosis for pregnant women and couples from a blood test performed early in pregnancy. Currently, non-invasive prenatal testing is used for a very limited range of genetic conditions, primarily to improve clinical management of the pregnancy. However, the long-standing objective of an early Down Syndrome diagnostic test is on the horizon. Further developments may offer a broader spectrum of genetic tests, such as single gene disorder and predisposition testing. Commercial companies are already offering fetal sex and paternity blood tests directly to consumers over the internet. These medical innovations have provoked considerable interest in clinical, policy and ELSI communities. Earlier, easier and potentially more widespread prenatal testing raises a host of ethical, legal and social issues that require informed, pluri-disciplinary, and international attention.
The symposium will consider current scientific and clinical developments in NIPD internationally, and ethical, legal, social, historical and philosophical issues they raise, with an emphasis on implications of NIPD for prenatal clinical, technological and ethical landscapes.
