Kurzbeschreibung: The theme for the 2012 ASBH meeting “Representing Bioethics” - invites participants to explore the varied ways in which “representation” and “bioethics” intersect. We encourage members to think about who is represented, misrepresented, or underrepresented in medicine, the medical humanities, and bioethics, and investigate the ways in which we can understand, challenge, or improve these representations. We encourage scholars to reflect in particular on representation of American health care in a time of transition, whether driven by rapidly emerging technologies, new areas of biomedical research, innovative health and public health policies, or social and political movements. We are eager to elicit work that either analyzes representations of medicine using the arts or humanities, or considers tools of representation in the arts or humanities that cast light on problems in biomedicine in new ways. Finally, we recognize that the field of bioethics represents itself to the public, press, and policy makers, to those outside its borders, and to the field of medicine itself and we welcome work that explores how bioethics can best do this.
