Kurzbeschreibung: New developments in life sciences strengthen the potential of medical utopia, the promise of a better life for everyone. This innovative process influences the way societies and individuals deal with their lives, health and disease, an effect that requires thorough conceptual interpretation as well as ethical reflection.
During the course we will study the relation between technology and (medical) ethics: the focus will be on the moral problems generated by the research and development and application of new knowledge in a range of emerging fields such as tissue engineering and genomics. The implications give rise to new images of the human being and it shifts common understanding of health and disease. Participants are requested to send in their own research proposal, including a one page summary prior to the course.
