Kurzbeschreibung: It is often noted that there has been a resurgence of interest in German idealism. This is not to be denied. However, to reap the full benefits of the scholarship this resurgence has produced, it is crucial to trace its trajectory, for the development of German idealist studies has led increasingly, perhaps inevitably, through Fichte and Hegel to Schelling. At the same time, such studies have driven the terms of the debate over the significance of the idealist project, from considerations of subjectivity, consciousness and mind, toward assessments of the prospects of an idealist brand of naturalism, one capable of making sense of embodiment, language, sociality and natural science.

This conference brings renowned scholars together to delineate the origins, development and impact of Schelling’s conceptions of nature and naturalism. It will deepen burgeoning explorations of Schelling’s work through analyses of the core philosophical issues that cut across it - metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, environmental philosophy - and thereby advance the ongoing resurgence of German idealist scholarship.
