Kurzbeschreibung: The past few decades have witnessed a growing interest in developing a systematic approach to end-of-life decision-making. Many of these questions fall within the scope of Palliative Medicine, and deal directly with the difficult task of balancing the values and ethical norms that guide the physician’s acting in light of the patient’s preferences. This multidisciplinary conference aims to address some of the most novel and salient ethical dilemmas that have recently arisen in Palliative Medicine, and will do so by exploring real-world bioethical problems such as dealing with difficult patients in palliative care, symptom management rejection, the limits of non-abandonment or presenting new teaching tools in bioethics and palliative care. It is our hope that the answers to these open questions will have fundamental implications for our conception of palliative medicine and its values in coming years.

The IV Annual Conference will be sponsored jointly by SEMI (Spanish Internal Medicine Society), “Francisco Valles” Clinical Ethics Institute and European University, Madrid, and will be hosted by the Tejerina Foundation, in Madrid, Spain.

This conference represents the joint effort of multiple medical and scientific associations, including not only the aforementioned societies, but also SEEIUC (Spanish Society of Critical Care Nurses), SEF (Spanish Society of Fertility), SemFYC (Spanish Society of Family Medicine), ABFyC (Fundamental and Clinical Bioethics Association), SEN (Spanish Society of Neurology), SEMES (Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine), SEMICYUC (Spanish Society of Critical Care), SMETICAE (Society of nursing ethics of Madrid), SECPAL (Spanish Society of Palliative Care) and GEPAC (Spanish Association of Cancer Patients).

One of the conference highlights will be the III Resident’s Prize for the Best Case in Clinical Bioethics.
