Kurzbeschreibung: International Conference for Young Scholars

"Complementary medicine" refers – often only vaguely – to a set of treatments that are supposed to promote health but have an outsider status in the healthcare system. Complementary medicine is a challenge on different levels for a pluralistic society that emphasises both patient autonomy and evidence-based medical treatments.

In our international conference, we like to bring together young scholars for a week of discussion and exchange with invited experts. Contributions about complementary medicine in general as well as case studies are invited. We especially encourage contributions from France and Germany or comparisons of these two countries.

The conference will be held in English. We invite contributions to one of the following topics or related ones:

1. Terminology and concepts
- Definitions: What are plausible criteria to distinguish complementary medicine from other fields of medicine? How can the field of concepts (alternative/complementary/traditional/conventional/scientific) be structured in a useful way?

2. Evidence
- Which evidence is necessary for a treatment to achieve regular care status? How are these evidence criteria evolving?
- What are exception regulations for complementary treatments and on which basis are they justified?
- Is it necessary to take plausibility criteria and possible effect mechanisms into account when evaluating medical treatments? How can this be done in a systematic and consistent way?

3. Ethics, Law and Governance
- Is it ethically justified to use treatments with unspecific effects?
- What are the duties of professionals concerning information (e.g. open/closed placebo use) and promotion of patients' positive expectations?
- On which basis can requested medical interventions be excluded from public funding?

We invite PhD students, postdocs and other researchers as well as practitioners from relevant disciplines and fields to present their ideas and discuss them with other researchers and experts. Expenses for travel, accommodation and meals will be covered. In addition, all participants will have the opportunity to prepare a manuscript and to submit it for a peer-reviewed publication. All participants submitting a manuscript ready for external review will receive a remuneration of 300 euros. Abstracts (max. 500 words) along with a CV may be submitted until 30 September 2022 via e-mail.
