Kurzbeschreibung: This year's European Forum in Alpbach addresses a particularly challenging issue: Communication and Networks. We will focus on these ideas for 17 days in this year's discussions and seminars, artistic events and podium discussions, once again making Alpbach a broad forum for the exchange of ideas.

The Forum will begin with a seminar week, a tradition which has gained renewed importance in hectic times like these. Whereelse do people take the time to discuss topics thoroughly from so many angles? Presentations by internationally renowned academics and scientists will provide valuable information and a basis for opinions, but let us not forget the intensive exchange of ideas among seminar participants as well. In response to the growing demand for international seminars, approximately half of them will be held in English this year.

As in previous years, the latter half of the event mainly provides politicians, business people, thinkers and other experts from various disciplines with an opportunity to exchange ideas. In particular, I would like to point out the Economics and Ethics symposium to be held for the first time this year. Especially the events of September 2001 have given us a painful reminder of how important it is to maintain an active dialog on sustainable values.

This year's European Forum is once again devoted to discussion without prejudice, anger or narrow-minded thinking. In hope that this year's discussions will be as successful as those of the past, I cordially invite you to take part in the 2002 European Forum.
