Kurzbeschreibung: Welcome to the Conference "Perceptions and Evaluations of Gene-Technology", 4-5 December 2003 How do we understand and interpret new gene-technologies in human reproduction, in medicine in general, in the breeding of animals or in food industry? What perceptions and what questions do different gene-technologies evoke? How are these perceptions articulated and how are questions dealt with? How are gene-technologies presented and how are they evaluated? These and other related questions will be discussed in an interdisciplinary forum during the conference. Ethical, communicative and societal perspectives on gene-technology will be brought together in order to provide a broad discussion on these challenging and complex issues. We are happy to invite researchers, journalists as well as others interested in the field. The program of the conference includes plenary sessions with keynote speakers: Professor Jeffrey Barker, Dept. of Philosophy, Converse College, South Carolina; Dr Martin Bauer, Dept. of Sociology, London School of Economics; Dr Elaine Graham, Dept. of Theology, University of Manchester and Professor Stellan Welin, Department of Technology and Social Change, University of Linköping. In addition, about 25 presentations will be given at parallel sessions during the conference. The conference will be concluded with a panel debate between keynote speakers Dr Bauer and Dr Graham and Helena von Troil, journalist and experienced biotechnology communication consultant, Annika Nilsson, scientific journalist and Ph.D-cand. and Monika Starendal, journalist at Dagens Forskning, a Swedish newspaper on on-going research.The theme of the panel is the journalist's role as interpreter and disseminator of scientific results. The conference will take place in the city of Linköping, Sweden, 4-5 December 2003. It is organised by the ELSA NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM in cooperation with the Department of Health and Society and the Department of Communication Studies at Linköping University. The deadline for registration is November 1, 2003.
