NEED FOR THE CONFERENCE:
The global consumer demand for high quality foods that are fresh tasting, safe and nutritive has created pressure for the development of new and improved production and processing technologies. This conference will focus on a multidisciplinary approach identifying key innovative technologies along the food chain and how to exploit these technologies, while at the same time reassuring the consumer of their safety.
Negative consumer attitudes to many emerging technologies constitute a major impediment to their application. This currently represents a key problem for the food industry. The fears of consumers are often based on lack of adequate communication between stakeholders. For example, technologies such as genomics and biotechnology, have not received a favourable response from the European consumer.
However, there are many claims that such approaches can have significant benefits for the consumer in terms of enhanced quality and safety. This conference will seek to address how such technologies can be harnessed and exploited in a customer friendly manner, with the consent of and for the benefit of the European citizen.
Who should attend?:
The conference will aim to attract a targeted audience of food industry stakeholders, including scientists, policy-makers, senior management from the food industry and consumer interest groups.
OBJECTIVES:
The conference will address critical issues along the total food chain, focusing on key new technologies from 'fork-to-farm,' while at the same time aiming to re-assure the consumer of the quality and safety of food. It will feature five main sessions dealing with key aspects of food quality, safety and consumer concerns along the food chain, specifically in the context of the application of
innovative technologies.
The conference will address the following strategic objectives:
* Focus on critical science and technology developments along the total food chain which can contribute to a more competitive European food industry whilst meeting consumers expectations for high quality and safe food
* Create awareness amongst food industry stakeholders, particularly SMEs, of opportunities for exploiting key innovative technologies which can provide the European consumer with wholesome food
* Identify how policy formation is influenced by both scientific progress and consumer concerns
* Provide a forum in which scientists, policy-makers, industry and consumer representatives can debate key issues which will impact on future trends in scientific and technological developments along the total food chain
* Identify potential risks and impediments to the take-up of innovative technologies
Expected outcomes:
A significant outcome will be to inform stakeholders of pportunities and challenges facing the European food industry as it seeks to adopt key new technologies while ensuring a safe and nutritious food supply. The information generated by this forum will enable the stakeholders, particularly the food industry, to make well-informed science-based decisions regarding their future strategies. It will also help to develop future co-operation through the formation of networks of researchers and others and the development of strategies facilitating an integrated approach through R&D and policy formulation.
