The aim and scope of the conference is to discuss ethical aspects of preimplantation genetic diagnosis and embryo selection in a broad context.
Four themes will be dealt with in four plenary sessions:
I. Selecting the Perfect Baby: The new reproductive biology, predictability of genetic testing, the ethics of embryo design, enhancement and the value of life.
II. Who shall decide and who shall be protected: The moral status of embryos, autonomy and the role of parents and society in decision making in embryo selection.
III. Positive and negative selection: Choosing children without abortion, discrimination, selection of embryos as potential cell or organ donors.
IV. Cultural aspects of embryo selection, including sex selection: Legislation, regulations and the Nordic dimension and cultural, social, religious, financial and scientific aspects of embryo selection as well as a feminist view of sex selection.
