Kurzbeschreibung: Welcome to Mannheim and the 12th Symposium, organized by the Epidemiology and Social Psychiatry Section of the Association of European Psychiatrists (AEP). The theme of the symposium will be: "Determinants and Consequences of Psychiatric Illness". It will be held between Wednesday, June 23, and Saturday, June 26, 2004.

The field of psychiatric epidemiology has experienced considerable growth and development in recent years. Our biennial meetings represent the largest gathering of psychiatric epidemiologists from Europe. They provide an excellent forum for frank discussions about the new directions in and issues related to our profession, particularly for young researchers, teachers, and other practitioners of our discipline.

The symposium will be held at two venues: the Jewish Community Center (Jüdisches Gemeindezentrum) and the Wartburg Hotel, which are immediate neighbors. Since it is anticipated that most delegates will wish to stay at the Wartburg Hotel, a block of rooms has been reserved for participants.

The transportation network to, from and within Mannheim is well developed, regardless of whether you use the roads, rails or airport. Frankfurt International Airport is only 75 km from Mannheim, with non-stop InterCityExpress (ICE) trains to Mannheim Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) and shuttle bus service (Lufthansa Airport Bus) directly to the Mannheim city center.

Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar Rivers, Mannheim is the economic and industrial motor in the Rhine-Neckar-Region of Germany and the second-largest city in the southern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Once the official residence of the Elector Prince Carl-Theodore, its famous Baroque palace is now the seat of the University of Mannheim. Modern Mannheim is home to a flourishing scientific and cultural community and is an excellent jumping-off point for cultural forays to the neighboring medieval cities of Heidelberg, Speyer, and Worms, boat trips along the Rhine or Neckar, or visits to the wine country of the nearby Palatinate, the Odenwald Forest or the Alsace area of eastern France.

We look forward to meeting you in Mannheim in June 2004.
