The symposium will address the engineering/science - policy/management interface, focusing in particular on the uncertainty and ignorance associated with predictions in science for policy, and on examining the implications of the Precautionary Principle from the scientific, ethical and legal perspectives. The specific areas of application that will be emphasized are water resource management and the risk assessment and regulation of chemicals
The format is 'a Kollekolle Symposium', organised by Environment & Resources DTU, Technical University of Denmark.
Ample time for detailed discussions will be included in the programme. The seminar language is English.
The proposed issues are:
· Integrated environmental assessment
· Water management issues
· Chemicals in the environment
The anticipated approach is to integrate over the following dimensions:
· The philosophy of science dimension
· Specific scientific issues and tools
· The ethical and judicial dimension
· The regulatory and institutional dimension
· The scientific basis for participatory
In the coming years, the crucial challenges in implementing precaution will be to provide a toolbox suitable for implementation, involving integration of all aspects: science, engineering, social sciences, law, management and institutions.
