Kurzbeschreibung: On behalf of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (ISBM), and "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Verhaltensmedizin und Verhaltensmodifikation" (DGVM) (the German Society of Behavioral Medicine and Behavior Modification), the Congress Organization Committee, and the Scientific Program Committee of the ISBM, it is a great pleasure to invite and welcome you to the 8th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine. The Congress will be held in Mainz, Germany.

The first congress of the ISBM was held in Uppsala in 1990. Since then, international congresses have been held every two years in six cities in three different continents. During these years the congresses have constantly grown in terms of scientific scope and number of participants. One of the main tasks of the society is to increase research, knowledge, and applications of behavioral medicine, and to provide a network for people interested in behavioral medicine. The congresses are a major tool to achieve these purposes. The growth is a sign of increasing interest and need for behavioral medicine research and practice worldwide. The expansion of the field is truly reflected in the theme of the coming congress: Integrating Social and Behavioral Sciences with Medicine and Public Health.

A prominent feature of the society is its interdisciplinary and inter-professional character. This has contributed to the pleasurable social ambience and informality of the meetings, offering plenty of opportunities for new ideas to be ventured, as well as creating social and professional networks. The meetings have typically been held in fairly small, beautiful and culturally interesting cities, which contributes to and enhances social interaction. The city of Mainz, with its historical roots in Roman times, will provide this mixture of attractions. Also, the congress organization will arrange special and unique social activities.

Health and well-being is truly on the agenda of the world today. The present and future challenges of health promotion demand that we look for partnerships with different actors in the health arena. They demand innovative research and practice. Behavioral medicine is breaking new ground, and our interdisciplinary approach gives us unique opportunities to be on the frontier. The high scientific quality of the program is a sign that behavioral medicine researchers and practitioners are important actors in this development. The Scientific Program Committee has assembled a number of outstanding invited speakers and workshop presenters from many parts of the world. I want to encourage you to participate in this exciting interchange by submitting abstracts on your latest research findings, and I hope you will also encourage your colleagues and friends to do likewise.

Welcome to an exciting and inspiring behavioral medicine meeting in beautiful and hospitable Mainz. I very much look forward to meeting you there.
