Kurzbeschreibung: It is a great pleasure to invite you to attend the 12th International Biotechnology Symposium, to be held in Santiago, Chile in October 2004 - the well known event that is held every 4 years on a different continent - sponsored by IUPAC, the international Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

This Symposium is the main international meeting in the rapidly expanding field of biotechnology. This will be the first time this conference will be held in Latinamerica.

For the 12th IBS in 2004 the Organising Committee have included many of the newer areas in our field in the scientific program. In keeping with previous IBS, the program is arranged in a number of Sections, with all presented papers being by invitation. Full details on the Sections are listed in the circular.

Each Section is chaired by two or three internationally recognized leaders in their field. These Chairs represent the leading research groups around the world. The Section Chairs have been given the task of selecting, on the basis of scientific excellence and relevance, lectures who will present the latest developments in the topic areas at the 12th IBS. These invited papers will be presented during five concurrent sessions which will run during the 12th IBS.

In addition, key international figures have been invited to give eight plenary lectures. Finally a very large number of posters will be available at the Symposium representing the latest scientific activities throughout the world in the areas covered by the various sections.

In the circular we have listed the chairmen of the various Sections; most of the scientific programs for the Symposium are now in place and the program in one of scientific excitement and excellence.

The 12th IBS, will be held in the heart of Santiago at the Casapiedra Convention Center. This is a custom designed location where all the concurrent sessions, trade display and poster areas are contained within the same building.
