Kurzbeschreibung: Introduction

Bodies devoid of mind are as statues in the market place - Euripides [485- 406 BC. Electra]

Does the manner in which we treat the dead reflect how we treat the living? The enquiries into the Alder Hey and Bristol scandals revealed that organs from dead children had been removed prior to burial, and stored or examined without parental knowledge or consent. This caused a great deal of anger, distress and media coverage. It also generated considerable hostility and mistrust towards the medical profession.

Professor Hafferty (Into the Valley) has described the dead and the dying as 'both grotesque caricatures and symbols of humanity'. And Professor Ruth Chadwick also views the human corpse as possessing 'symbolism over and above its status as a material object'.

Conference Aims

This conference aims to promote the exploration and debate of how we should treat the dead in our society and to what extent we should use the dead as a resource for the living. Dr Stephen Wilkinson (author of Bodies for Sale) argues that the term 'exploitation' has both a moral and non-moral meaning. There are two distinct moral concerns: the disparity of value and wrongful use.

Are these concerns well founded in relation to the use of human cadavers? What other moral and practical considerations should we make when considering our treatment of the dead in the pursuit of scientific knowledge, medical progress and education.

The aims are also to provide a variety of perspectives, to offer speakers and participants the opportunity to examine current lay and professional attitudes and practices, and to challenge assumptions and prejudices in this context.

Who Should Attend

The conference is intended for medical, nursing and allied professionals, philosophers, ethicists, lawyers, teachers, students, social scientists, administrators and all individuals who wish to explore and debate the key issues in this very important and topical area of ethical discourse.
