In order to continue to deliver benefits to the world, biotechnology must address these ethical concerns effectively. Failure to do so may derail this technological movement at its time of greatest promise.
The companies featured in the Symposium took part in a recently completed three-year research study. Detailed case studies of each of these firms and others are featured in a new book, BioIndustry Ethics, to be published in spring 2005 by Reed Elsevier's Academic Press.
Reflecting the real world lessons learned from this extensive research effort, the Thornton Symposium will address issues such as:
- Enhancing Ethical Decision-Making Capabilities - Assessing the Impact of Ethical Approaches - Emerging Ethical Issues Facing Bioscience Companies - Motivation for Building an Ethical bioscience Company
