Kurzbeschreibung:
The Conference on Law, Values & the Life Sciences represents an exceptional opportunity for academics, researchers, and policymakers interested in the intersection of law and science to exchange knowledge and ideas on existing and developing areas of science, law, and policy. Science and medicine today present both breathtaking possibilities and daunting issues. Scientists have published the genetic sequence comprising the human genome, leading to unprecedented opportunities for preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease. Breakthroughs in plant and microbial genetics are already transforming the way we think about food, with potential for greater yields and food tailored to prevent and treat disease. Scientists are unlocking the secrets of stem cells, creating the potential to grow replacement parts for the human body, rather than allowing people to languish while awaiting transplants. Startling new ways of creating life, from in vitro fertilization with micro-manipulation of gametes and embryos to human cloning, extend the seemingly endless possibilities. In the larger natural world, humanity stands on the brink of incommensurable losses in biodiversity and of devastating changes in the global climate. These developments raise numerous legal issues, many of them deeply troubling. Each of these breakthroughs is controversial, some offering great good and some threatening unacceptable harm. Meanwhile, environmental challenges have tested the ability of governments and businesses to stave off ecological and evolutionary disaster. While science surges forwardfor good and illlaw, ethics, and public policy lag far behind. This conference will address the issues that remain among the most challenging of our time, those issues at the intersection of law, ethics, policy, and the life sciences.
